4 Reasons Why Running Marketing Is Like Working Out

It’s been a while since the start of the year so I bet you haven’t thought about your new year’s resolution to “work out more” in a while. Oops. But, if you don’t mind, picture yourself at the gym for a second. Or out on a run in your neighborhood. Any idea how this has anything at all to do with your marketing?

It may sound odd, but taking care of your marketing is actually a lot like working out.

Here are 4 reasons why:

1. It’s never too late to start

For someone who has never worked out before, the concept of fitness and taking charge of your health can be really darn scary. In the same way, a lot of clients who haven’t ventured into the marketing world have come to us hesitant to even touch marketing with a 10ft pole.

We’ve made it this far without it- why start now?

We get it. The overwhelm is valid. There are thousands of tools and approaches and strategies, it’s hard to know where to begin. How do I know what workouts to do? What gym do I sign up for? Want kind of pre-workout is the best? But that’s the thing- the starting is what matters. Acknowledging that you want it and then taking the brave step to begin is the most important part. All you need to do is show up! The next steps will come naturally.

2. The WHY behind what you’re doing is crucial. It has to be big enough to keep you going

You can’t just want it because everyone else does, or because someone told you that you should. If you don’t have a real purpose or drive behind working out, eventually you’ll crash and burn. The same goes for your marketing. It should be driven by what lies in the deep beneath your brand, by the pounding heartbeat of your business. That’s what will sustain you in the waiting periods. Want to grow for the sake of growth? That isn’t gonna fly.

At Fidelis, we believe that successful businesses allow people to flourish and push blessing into the earth. It’s a cause we can get behind, and it keeps us going.

Figure out what drives you, and remind yourself of it every step of the way. It will be the fuel to your fire. That’s the big secret behind successful marketing.

3. You won’t (and shouldn’t) get instant results

People are going to try to sell you a quick fix. Just take this pill, and you’ll lose all that weight and more! But sadly, that’s just not how it works. Most of the time with both marketing and fitness, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Even if it seems like you’re getting instant results, booms just aren’t sustainable. Marketing is about long-term solutions, setting the groundwork, and laying the foundation for growth. You won’t be able to run a marathon as soon as you lace up those brand new running shoes, so don’t expect your numbers to skyrocket the moment you start your new marketing efforts. Good marketing provides steady, consistent, upward trending growth. That exponential curve is gonna look real good once you give it some time.

4. Trying to find the approach that works for you can be daunting, but hiring a professional can help

Okay, so you decide you want to start working out. You know what motivates you. You know that drastic change shouldn’t be expected right away. What on earth do you do next?!

You’ve come this far, so it’s time to take advantage of the circumstances! Doing your own research is great, but you’ll find quickly that a lot of people will say a lot of different things. To combat info overload, it can be beneficial to consult a professional you can trust. Personal trainers create custom workout plans that consider things like your body type, past injuries, and goals so that you are set up for success from the get-go. That marketing advice blog that popped up in your google search might sound pretty nice, but it can’t possibly know the ins and outs of your company, your 3yr goals, or your company values. Working with a professional who knows these things about you can make all the difference. They can develop a custom marketing plan for your business, taking into account the important things like your budget, your values, and your long-term goals.

If you’re ready to start marketing, or ready for a marketing overhaul, congratulations! You just took the most important step. Now let’s keep up that momentum.

Your marketing will thank you!
