Day 2: Marketing Mindsets

This is day 2 of a 30-day challenge wherein I’m talking about all things marketing. This is meant to cover the broad spectrum and the shallow end of marketing. I hope that I hit on something that you didn’t know or encourage you to get out there and try some new things.

So today I wanted to talk about general mindsets that are necessary as you approach your marketing and your marketing strategies.

First off: Consistency.

Please please please if you start something, keep it going. Give it a little bit of time. Be patient with it and hopefully you’ll start to actually get some understanding of what is working and what isn’t working. You’ve got to give things some time. One of the biggest mistakes I see is people will try something – get insecure – and then pull it and simply ‘overthink’ it.

Second: Fight the urge to play it too safe.

I also want to talk about playing not to lose.

Don’t do that. Don’t play to ‘not lose’ – because you’re going to be on defense. You’re going to be on your heels quite often and marketing is a very proactive, contact sport. You’ve got to get out there. You’ve got to be looking for opportunities. And yeah, you’re going to probably make some mistakes, but really with any luck, you’re going to have way more wins than you are going to have losses. Be willing to make small mistakes.

Third: Don’t Stop.

You need to think about marketing like your life depends on its success. We often talk about a bathtub- if the goal is to fill the bathtub and there’s a leak, you don’t turn off the spigot, and hope that the water doesn’t go away. You fix the problems. And if anything, you turn on the water even more to get more full, right?

Anyway, I hope this encourages you to get out there and maybe just start making some moves. Keep on going!
