Day 12: Maximizing Your Efforts

Day 12 of 30. Let’s talk about matching your efforts to your audience.

There are a thousand different ways that you can be marketing, right? You could be on all of the different social media platforms, you could be working through your email list, you could go to coffee every morning with somebody different, you could go to the Rotary Club, you could go to TV stations, you could go to college and teach a class. All of these different channels are available to you, but what I want to encourage you to do is to find your audience first.

Find out where they are and go to them. Don’t set up a small kingdom for yourself and hope that they come to you. Instead, know where they are.

Then, as you look at all of the different marketing channels, make sure you know the stated and unstated rules of each platform. Don’t go post your resume on Instagram. Don’t try to do a TikTok dance on LinkedIn. That would be totally weird.

That’s the second rule- be cool about it.

Be normal. Don’t be strange about things. You can go the extra mile, but you don’t necessarily want to break the system. There is a really great book by Gary Vaynerchuk called Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook, and it describes some of the rules – written and unwritten – of each of these platforms and helps you decide where your customer might be. So if you want to know more about this, read that book. It’s a good starting place. You can also talk to a marketing professional such as myself. You can always drop me a message.

Hopefully that helps you to get thinking about your own marketing practices. Where are you? What platform and what channels are you working in? Is it successful, or is it just steam and hot air? You don’t want that. You don’t want wasted efforts.
